Frequently Asked Questions
What does ‘Peace of Mind Test’ mean?
A Peace of Mind test (or ‘POM test’ for short) is a DNA test that you can do yourself at home, using a mail order testing kit. A POM test is designed for your own reassurance and peace of mind – the results will not be admissible in legal proceedings.
What samples are required for a DNA test?
For most types of DNA test, the testing lab will use a sample of buccal cells, which are collected from the inner cheek using a mouth swab. The procedure is quick and painless. For prenatal testing, a blood sample will be taken from the mother along with a mouth swab from the alleged father.
Does a doctor have to carry out the test?
If you order a Peace of Mind test, you can collect the samples yourself by following the instructions included in your testing kit. For a prenatal test, the blood samples should be collected by a trained phlebotomist or medical professional.
How early can you test a newborn baby?
Mouth swabs can be taken from a baby immediately after birth.
Is consent required?
Any DNA test requires signed consent forms. All the necessary forms will be included in your DNA testing kit. It is illegal to obtain DNA samples from an individual without their knowledge. Written authority is needed from each adult whose samples will be collected for testing. For children under the age of 16, a person with parental responsibility must provide consent on the child’s behalf.
Can you test more than one father?
Yes. A standard paternity test includes enough swabs to test one child and one potential father. However you can request extra mouth swabs & consent forms to test as many additional fathers as you like.
What is included in a home paternity test kit?
A home paternity test kit will contain the following items:
- A testing request form
- A form asking for personal details and written consent for the test. Each individual involved in the test must sign the consent forms before the test can be carried out.
- Instructions explaining how to take the DNA samples and how to package & return everything to the lab
- An already-addressed envelope for returning your DNA samples
- 3 sample collection swab packages, each containing 2 swabs (extra swab packages can be requested for additional fathers).
- Individual sample envelopes for the child, the alleged father and the mother (the mother’s sample isn’t strictly necessary, but it’s useful to have it if the mother is available).
